A few years ago I made a new year's resolution to "get really into Scotch." It didn't last more than one dram of Johnny Walker Red, but I know now that was my big mistake.
I am, first and foremost, a bourbon girl. Fear not, my American friends, I have not moved abroad to scorn America's National Spirit. But I think I have figured out why so many Americans dislike Scotch, and it's the same reason so many Scottish folks wrinkle their noses at the mention of "bourbon."
Bourbon selection at most Scottish bars is about as broad as a typical American dive bar's Scotch choices -- a few bottles, mostly big names with horrible bouquets and worse flavors.
I've now been fortunate enough to open my mind, nose, and palette, to scotch whiskies beyond Johnny Walker Red (sorry, but I can't stand the stuff), and I'm looking forward to spending the next year re-visiting my favorites and making new whisky friends. Perhaps along the way, I'll manage to find some good bourbons lurking nearby and can open the minds and noses of my Scottish friends to what deliciousness a fine Kentucky bourbon can offer.
